Now, when you go travel, the two most important purchases are your walking shoes and backpack. There are many lists on the internet about the best shoes and backpack. We have already listed our favorite walking shoes, now we’ll tell you what our favorite backpacks are. However, we’ll not just make a list of 10 backpacks. We have decided what the 3 main characteristics are that people look for when buying a travel backpack and selected our favorite backpack for each of these. The 3 categories for best travel backpack of 2016 are: ‘Most multifunctional travel backpack’, ‘Best travel backpack on a budget’ and ‘best lightweight backpack’. Of course, characteristics like comfort are important for all of these. Let’s go!
Best travel backpack on a budget
The goldilocks pricezone for a good backpack is between 150$ and 250$. Backpacks over 250$ mostly have unnecessary add-ons while backpacks under 150$ might have inferior quality fabric. However, there are some excellent travel backpacks that you can get for around 120$. Our favorite backpack on a budget is Kelty Redwing 44 Backpack. This backpack has a lot of features that mostly only come with higher end backpacks. It has panel loading, side compression straps, DPFE frame sheet, padded shoulder straps and water bottle handler. It is excellently water resistant for me 44 liter is the perfect size.
It is a bit more simple than some other backpacks compartment-wise but to me this isn’t even a downsize. The fabric is high quality and also has meshes so breathability is nothing to worry about. The Kelty Redwing 44 Backpack is a perfect budget choice for any travel ranging from either a short nature walk to a medium long hiking trip. This backpack goes for only 119.95$ on Amazon.
Most multifunctional travel backpack
For me this was an easy the choice. The most multifunctional travel backpack is without a doubt the Deuter Transit 50. Deuter is an excellent German brand mainly selling in Europe but thanks to the internet, you can now also get these super well made backpacks in America. The Deuter Transit 50 is a great mix between a hiking backpack and a travel backpack. It has a quality suspension system, well-padded shoulder straps, and nice hip belt — all of which can be stowed away. It also has a shoulder strap so the bag can be carried like a messenger bag. This is the only backpack like this to have a shoulder strap so that’s a big plus.
When you aren’t carrying a lot, you can use the shoulder strap to use it as a messenger bag. The Transit 50 also has top and size carry handles. Another cool feature is that the torso length for this backpack can be adjusted to fit different torsos. This is a huge feature because it means you can ensure a great fit. The Transit 50 is 50L, weighs a little over 4lbs, and it has a detachable 15L daypack. A daypack is incredibly handy, so you can leave the backpack in your hotel or tent and use the smaller daypack for essential stuff during the day.
The Deuter Transit 50 is very decently priced around $180 on Amazon. Which really isn’t much for a backpack this versatile and well built.
Best lightweight travel backpack
If you want to keep the strain on your back on a minimum, for example for medical reasons or just when your back if one of the first places that aches, you should go for a lightweight travel backpack. They are a bit smaller and less multifunctional, but they are made to be as comfortable as possible. My friend James always had minor back problems and he said the best backpack for such situations is the Osprey Porter 46 Travel Backpack.
It’s a carry-on sized backpack with a full-length panel loading design, a dedicated laptop compartment, and hide-away shoulder straps. And those are good shoulder straps, and the waist belt is great, too. They really didn’t skimp on this feature, and it’s also available in two different torso length sizes, so it’s definitely going to be comfortable.
It has hideaway straps and comes in three colors. It receives near perfect reviews on Amazon too (4.8 out of 5 in 142 reviews). Amazon sells these for 130$, a true bargain!
Do you use any of these backpacks? You have another proposal? Let us know in the comments!
